Dirang Monastery

Dirang Monastery is Thupsung Dhargey Ling Monastery, and is certainly one of the most beautiful Monastery in Arunachal Pradesh

This Monastery is in fact a learning institute for the study of Tibetian Buddhism by monks and other people. The name “Thupsung Dhargey Ling ” was given by His Holiness Dalai Lama, which means the place of flourishing of Buddha’s speech.

Best time to visit

We visited in the month of March and weather was really pleasant. During mornings and evening, a light jacket is always required. Sometimes during day when it gets clouded, suddenly the temperature drops and weather becomes cooler.

Get to know more about Dirang Monastery !!

On the ground floor, you will find prayer wheels which are most important part of Buddhist culture. It is said, that the prayer wheels contains Buddhist books and relics rolled inside the cylindrical wheel. A normal person can not chant those many mantras at a time, so while rotating a prayer wheel we are able to chant many mantras at once. So it is always a good idea to rotate the prayer wheels when visiting any monastery.

On the first floor of Monastery, there is a small shop selling tea and coffee. You need to actually climb 2 floors to reach the main courtyard, but the 360 degree views from here are totally worth watching. There is even a guest house attached to the monastery, and the rooms are quite spacious. It would be a great experience to stay in the Monastery.

The Monastery is newly constructed and the moment you enter, you will notice the sophisticated designs all over the pillars and the beautifully ornamented entrance of the monastery. On the ground floor, there is an huge garden, and you get a gorgeous view of entire Monastery from the center of garden. The monastery overlooks entire Dirang city, and can be seen on a hill top from any part of the city.

Visit the monastery during morning hours, and you are likely to see lesser tourists. Since it is surrounded by mountains on all sides and far away from the main town, you will love the peaceful environment here. All you can hear is the sound of birds or of soothing breeze, a perfect place to meditate and embrace the calmness.

The prayer hall is on the top floor. A huge statue of Buddha can be seen at the center of the hall and entire hall is decorated with Buddhist art work. There are even siting arrangements on floor for mediation, not just for monks but also for normal public.
